The Sustainable Power and Energy Centre (SPEC) at UC San Diego is April’s Film of the Month, chosen from the TBD archive – April 2020.
‘As we pack for a shoot, there is something we have to double- and triple-check,’ says Joe Thompson, Producer/Director at TBD Media Group.
‘Batteries. Batteries for cameras, batteries for lights, batteries for sound. If the power runs out on your mic pack, you don’t have a film. If a battery runs down, you can recharge it, but you’re looking at a couple of hours before you can start shooting again.’
This film, shot at The Sustainable Power and Energy Centre (SPEC) at UC San Diego, is close to Joe’s heart: he recently documented a seven-month trip around the world, reporting back from dozens of countries including Nepal, Japan, Canada, and Chile.
‘Making power portable is the holy grail us as filmmakers,’ says Joe. ‘I don’t think there’s a director alive who hasn’t missed a great shot because a battery has died, and of course everyone has had the experience of a mobile phone run out of power. On a global scale, battery technology is combating climate change, making clean energy available to electric cars and communities that are not currently on the grid.’
Happily, a little Californian solar power was more than enough to enable Joe to finish shooting this film.
